::IN POOR TASTE::VIVIENNE WESTWOOD'S "HOMELESS CHIC"

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD
MILAN

CLOTHING ASIDE, (we'll get to that in just a moment) What on earth was team Westwood THINKING?!!! or should I say, NOT thinking.

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD showed her menswear line in Milan last night, in what has got to be one of the most tasteless shows in recent memory. The "catwalk" was covered with cardboard, the models were disheveled, and covered in dirt, pushed shopping carts down the runway and wore sleeping bags as props.
::

WHAT IS THE POINT OF THIS?

Is this supposed to bring light to this issue? If so- why wasn't it done a lot more tasteful instead of trivializing, and almost romanticizing homelessness?

There is absolutely nothing- NOTHING chic about homelessness.

FACT: According to the UN, bout 25,000 people die every day of hunger or hunger-related causes.
FACT: The wealthiest 20% of the world’s population consumes 76.6% of the world’s goods while 80% of humanity gets the remainder.

Honestly, the line is strong enough to stand alone- without the use of these awful props. What could have been a successful show with well executed clothing, was out-shined by incredible poor judgement (no pun intended).

::"Get a Life" t shirt below... New meaning to insensitivity.

::What do you think lovelies, Avant-garde- or disaster? ::

this is disgusting. the clothes were good enough by themselves. putting people down when they are already so low is the worst thing a person can do.

Hi I really like your blog glad that you brought it back to life after the radiosilence :)Anyways I never really like Vivienne westwood as I think the concept behind her clothes have no meaning in my eyes she just put outrageous things on the catwalk to shock people. That may have worked when she started out but its like she is becoming a one trick pony.

I don't know why you all are hating on this but I LOVE the idea. What is art for if not bringing the beauty out of the mundane, the taboo, the unnoticed? Not only is she bringing your attention to a social realm most of us are quick to turn from, but she's also mocking those of us who insist (ignorantly) that beauty is only in the expensive, in the designed, or in the upper class. Boo to those of you who can't see the genius of Westwood's direction. I expect that only people who can think and see outside of the box (the REAL creatives) would enjoy what Westwood is offering here. She has all of my support and love.

it's crazy but did you know one of the male models was actually a homeless person who turned up and was put in the show because they thought he was someone else. ironic really

Yeah Westwood, it's been done! (Zoolander)
I suppose if it were to bring attention to the cause, or if it were executed in a less direct and more artful way but this... tasteless.

This reminds me of Erin Wasson and her 'clever' comment about homeless people. You must be idiot to think they are chic and more idiot to say that 'out loud'...I bet they feel chic when they sleep in a box!

Lighten up. I think its genius! Super luxe is showcased all the time, why can't a poor/homeless reference be made? We are in a recession. Its irony, people!

But what if team Westwood wanted to make a show like that because they thought people would begin to think the problem. I dont believe they think homelesness is cool. Westwood have had campaigns before that criticize western society...
Anyways, I think they didnt succeed because the point is invisible. They should have created a campaign whole different if criticizing was their purpose.
